Our natural and social capital are privileges around which we can build responsible and sustainable economic well-being. We are the second most biodiverse country on the planet and according to the FAO, we are ranked 25th out of 223 countries with the greatest potential to expand the agricultural sector without affecting the natural forest cover. We have 22 million hectares suitable for agriculture and we work only six million.
And we not only have land, we have water: we’re the sixth country in the world with the largest water resources, and it’s a powerful combination. We can leverage all this potential, use technology to do this in a sustainable and inclusive way, and create benefits for our farmers.
Technology allows us to do more with less in the field. And it is urgent, because we will be about 10,000 million people by 2050 and for that we have to double food production. With artificial intelligence and machine learning based on millions of data on who produces a crop—pH, herbicide use, pest control, temperature, humidity, light—farmers can irrigate and use pesticides only when necessary, at the right time. To enable this, the connectivity gap in rural areas needs to be closed. Thanks to these solutions, 180,000 farmers in 190 schools, 40 community centers and nine departments have high-speed Internet communication through spaces of the electromagnetic spectrum.
There, connectivity is only a means to achieve one objective: rural communities use the Internet to educate themselves, to tech their crops, to access health, to connect to production chains.
In addition to doing more with less in rural areas, creating sustainable development and welfare for farmers, our ecosystems have a unique ability to capture carbon and contribute to solving the global problem of climate change. Thanks to tech platforms, Colombia is already the recipient of a carbon bond, which provides 80 cents for every dollar traded, to small producers to improve their agro-forestry practices and free the planet from the dangers of climate change.
