The National Security Bureau will establish a new cyber security unit to protect Taiwan from attacks by the Chinese military. There is speculation that the unit will recruit civilians skilled in cyber security. DPP Legislator Tsai Huang-lang said that most countries around the world have already stepped up their internet security efforts and he fears Taiwan may be one step behind. The scene in this movie shows a hacker attack plunging this internet network into virtual chaos. Taiwan’s National Security Bureau annually sees an average of 3.77 million Chinese military hacker attacks, with 120,000 malicious intrusions. This has led NSB director-general Lee Shying-jow to establish a cyber defense unit.Tsai Huang-langLegislative Defense CommitteeChina’s military and hackers have been attacking Taiwan’s government units for the past 10 years. We hope to establish a national firewall. Otherwise, continued attacks by Chinese military cyber warfare units will affect national security. The cyber unit is expected to open in May. Other major countries have already established specialized cyber warfare units. This has led to concerns that current units charged with this duty, such as the Cabinet’s National Information and Communication Security Taskforce and the Defense Ministry’s Communications Development Office, are insufficient.Huang Wei-cherDPP LegislatorBoth the United States and Mainland China have the staff and the equipment to manage a high degree of cyber security, whether they rely on military or government units. Taiwan’s efforts seem feeble.Legislators are calling on the government to focus on cyber security and increase protection as a means of ensuring national security.
