Sunday Science: eDNA Technology and Species Recovery – Nightlife

iSpeech

DNA, tiny pieces of genetic code, is left behind in traces through our wake and ends up virtually anywhere. We know of the forensic work using DNA from crime scenes. But humans are not the only ones who shed this genetic code; animals and plants leave eDNA. How is it used for conservation, ecology, pest control, and even to warn you when you might get your next allergy attack?

Science Communicator at the Australian Science Media Centre, Lyndal Byford, spoke with Suzanne Hill of the opportunity to monitor native and invasive species and biodiversity assessments with eDNA. Associate Professor Nick Osborne at the School of Public Health, University of Queensland, outlined his work applying this emerging, revolutionary scientific technology.
