Reuters reports that Sri Lankan officials said on Monday the country would be invoking emergency powers in the aftermath of devastating bombings on hotels and churches over the weekend. The attacks have claimed the lives of 290 people and nearly 500 more have suffered wounds. The emergency law, which gives police and the military extensive powers to detain and interrogate suspects without court orders, will go into effect at midnight on Monday.
