Sony to use Microsoft’s Azure AI technology in new smart camera sensors

Sony Semiconductor Solutions says it will embed Microsoft’s Azure AI technology into its new intelligent vision sensor for smart cameras under a partnership between the companies. Sony will also use Microsoft’s Azure IoT and Cognitive Services technologies in a related app.

The semiconductor company, part of Sony Group, last week announced the new IMX500 sensor, which it described as the world’s first image sensor to offer AI image analysis and processing on the logic chip. The company says the sensor will use AI to extract information from still images and video taken by smart cameras and other devices.

Integrating Microsoft’s technology “will result in smarter, more advanced cameras for use in enterprise scenarios as well as a more efficient allocation of resources between the edge and the cloud to drive cost and power consumption efficiencies,” the companies said in a news release.

The news comes in advance of Microsoft’s Build developer conference, slated to take place virtually on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
