Softball Splits with DeSales on the Road

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. (April 24, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team split their doubleheader with MAC Freedom opponent DeSales on the road, Sunday, April 24. They won the first game 3-0 and fell in the second game by a score of 5-4.
 
First-year Kaitlin Smith (5-7) pitched a complete game and gave up only three hits in the 3-0 win. First-year Rachael Prescott led the Ducks with four hits going a combined 4 for 4 in both games and she had two RBI. With the split, Stevens is now 10-16 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
 
Junior Kayleigh Ferraro and junior Olivia Ondrejca led DeSales with three hits each on the day. First-year Tabitha Lawless (4-1) entered the second game in relief in the third inning and received the win. The Bulldogs are now 10-19 overall and 5-7 in conference play.
 
Stevens took and early 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Sophomore Jessica Guerrero singled up the middle to bring in the first run of the day and then sophomore Madison Kidd picked up and RBI on a sacrifice fly that scored senior Meg Halloran.
 
The Ducks added their third run of the day in the fifth inning. Halloran stole third base and then advanced to home after an errant throw from DeSales. Smith struck out two batters in the shutout effort for Stevens. Senior Heather Hall (1-7) was credited with the loss for the Bulldogs.
 
In game two, it was DeSales that jumped out to the early lead. They scored four runs in the bottom of the first and the scored was 4-0. The Ducks slowly began to chip away at the early deficit. They scored twice in the top of the second, junior Alex Schoellig and sophomore Carolyn Yahn each had an RBI to make the score 4-2.
 
Prescott began to make her presence felt in the third inning for Stevens. She picked up an RBI single to make the score 4-3 and then in the fifth inning she tied the game on an RBI single that scored Halloran. DeSales quickly took back their lead in the bottom of the fifth and then never gave it back. The Ducks fell 5-4 and junior Erin Kreis (5-8) received the loss despite striking out four and giving up only one run.
 
Up Next: Stevens travels to Doylestown, Pa., for a conference doubleheader against Delaware Valley on Wednesday, April 27. Game times are set for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
