Softball Eliminated by Babson in NCAA Regional Action

Box Score 1 GENESEO, N.Y. (May 14, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team earned their first NCAA win in program history with a 4-0 victory over No. 19 SUNY Geneseo in their first game of the day. They fell 9-3 in game two to No. 19 Babson and were eliminated from NCAA Regional play.
 
It was an impressive 2022 campaign for the Ducks in which they won their second-straight MAC Freedom title. The finished the year with a 19-19 record. Geneseo finished the season 34-5 and Babson improved to 37-9.
 
Fifth-year Siobhan Cottell led Stevens with a combined four hits across both games, going 2 for 3 in both contests. She also had an RBI. Sophomore Madison Kidd had three hits combined and also had two RBI. Graduate student Amanda Delorme was also solid at the plate, going 3 for 6.
 
Elimination was on the line in the first game of the day for the Ducks. Stevens took control early in the game and never looked back. Cottell stayed hot at the plate and got the Ducks on the board with a double to left field in the bottom of the first for an early 1-0 lead. Delorme drove in another run in the second with a single to right field and Stevens led 2-0.
 
Junior Alex Schoellig and Kidd each drove in a run in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, to make the score 4-0. First-year Kaitlin Smith (9-9) pitched a complete game shutout from the circle for her ninth win of the season. Sophomore Lauren Kersch (15-2) was credited with the loss for the Knights.
 
Game two went back and forth as both Stevens and Babson looked to avoid elimination and advance to the third and final day of play. Sophomore Chloe Joslin homered to give the Beavers an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Kidd responded with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning and the game was tied 1-1.
 
In the very next inning, Babson drove in another run on a triple to right field and Stevens quickly answered again in the second half of the inning. Sophomore Jessica Guerrero doubled to right field to bring home Delorme and tie the game 2-2. Once again, Babson answered. This time the Beavers scored twice on a single from junior Lexi Morris and the Ducks trailed 4-2.
 
Stevens finally cut into the lead in the sixth inning. Cottell doubled to start the inning and she was replaced at second by junior Elise Fauske who quickly stole third. She scored on the next at bat when first-year Emma Ruiz grounded out to second and the score was 4-3.
 
Babson added five more runs in the seventh to close out the game and win 9-3. Sophomore Moira O'Reilly (21-5) was credited with the win, striking out six and giving up just one run in four and two thirds innings. Junior Erin Kreis (9-9) received the loss for Stevens
 
Up Next: The loss concluded the 2022 season for the Ducks. They will look to build and improve on an impressive campaign this year.
