The 2022-2023 PGA TOUR season heads to Playa del Carmen, Mexico with the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba starting this Thursday.
The TOUR is coming off of its weakest field of the fall swing thus in Bermuda where Seamus Power emerged victorious at 19-under par by a stroke over Thomas Detry.
El Camaleón Golf Course hosts the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba this week, making this the 10th consecutive year where the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba will be played at this venue and the 16th time in 17 years overall.
This is the second straight PGA TOUR tournament where there will be a cut as this week’s field stands at 129 players as of Monday morning.
Last week’s tournament lacked some star power in Bermuda, but this week the stars are back in action as Viktor Hovland chases his third consecutive win at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba after winning here in 2020 and 2021. He is second on the opening odds board at +1100 behind only world No. 2 Scottie Scheffler (+900). Scheffler can regain the top spot from Rory McIlroy in the Official World Golf Rankings with a win this week.
Other big names in the field at Mayakoba include Collin Morikawa, Tony Finau, Jason Day, Billy Horschel and Justin Rose.
Course Preview
El Camaleón Golf Course measures 7,034 yards as a par 71 with paspalum greens. Greg Norman designed the course as it opened in 2006. Like the chameleon, which it is named after and is featured on the trophy, the course has consistently changing scenery as it shows off three different settings: the Mexican Caribbean Sea coastline, the Mayan jungle and mangrove wetlands.
This is the 16th time in the last 17 years that the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba appears on the PGA TOUR schedule, each tournament hosted at El Camaleón. This was the first PGA TOUR tournament ever to be hosted outside of the United States or Canada in 2007.
Past Winners
Viktor Hovland picked up his third PGA TOUR victory in 2021 here in Playa del Carmen. He shot a four-under 67 in the final round to beat Carlos Ortiz by four strokes at 23-under par in his successful title defense. When he won in 2020, he shot a final-round 65 to hold off Aaron Wise by a stroke at 20-under par.
Overall, seven former champions of this event will tee it up this week as Hovland, Brendon Todd, Matt Kuchar, Patton Kizzire, Charley Hoffman, Harris English and John Huh are all in the field.
