Russian companies face difficulties finding cybersecurity specialists

As Russia continues to get blamed for the recent spate of cybersecurity incidents that have compromised the data integrity of major corporations in the West including Australia, Russian companies are finding it increasingly difficult to find cybersecurity personnel for their own security needs.

A news report from Russian media outlet Comnews, based on a new survey of Russian companies, says that a third of Russian companies have a cybersecurity department and an information security director in 2022 - and that proportion is growing.

What's more, 54% of Russian companies experience a shortage of personnel in the information security market.

Of these, 17% note that the problem has increased compared to 2020-2021 and experts say that the shortage of personnel in the information security market is the most acute area in IT.

According to a joint survey by risk management software developer SearchInform and recruitment platform provider HH.ru, 48% of the representatives of critical information infrastructure surveyed speak of a shortage of information security specialists, while another 24% note that the shortage in 2022 has increased.

"Among backbone enterprises that must comply with the requirements of the decree, the situation is even worse," say the authors of the survey.



According to HH.ru, the shortage of personnel in the information security sector is getting worse: there is less than one resume per one open vacancy.

“Moreover, in order to achieve a minimum acceptable and comfortable situation with hiring in this segment, one open vacancy should have at least four resumes," HH.ru states in the report.

"Then the employer has an adequate choice among candidates in terms of the level of required skills and experience.





"Based on this calculation, the labor market needs an additional 30 thousands of information security specialists in 2022.

"The situation is forcing employers to reduce the requirements for future employees in the information security departments.

"If in 2021 more than half, 51%, of vacancies were open strictly for specialists with experience from one to three years, then in 2022 the share of vacancies for experienced specialists (more than six years) and young people without experience remains the same - 3% and 13%, respectively."

According to the report, a third of those surveyed reported that the information security department appeared in companies this year or is in the process of being created.

The same number noted that the company has or will soon have a head responsible for information security.

"Over the year, companies have begun to more clearly describe the requirements for the necessary skills," the report states.

"The share of references to skills and knowledge of the basics of information security in vacancies has grown from 18% to 31%, knowledge of technical means of information protection - from 5% to 8%, and cryptographic information protection tools are now found in 7% of IS vacancies."

"The shortage of personnel in the information security market is one of the most acute, even against the background of other areas in IT," says CSO HH.ru Vitaly Terentyev.

"Last year, there were 0.4 resumes of profile applicants for one information security vacancy, this year - 0.6. With such a modest growth rate for the year, there is no need to talk about any improvement in the situation."
