(Kitco News) - RecycLiCo Battery Materials has a technology advantage, said CTO Zarko Meseldzija.

Last week Meseldzija spoke to Kitco.

Formerly named American Manganese, the company is focused on lithium-ion battery recycling.

With energy transition underway, the global lithium-ion battery recycling market will be worth about $24.31 billion by 2030 using a 21.43% compound annual growth rate, according to a Market Research Future report published last year. To meet the opportunity, a number of companies announced growth plans and large financings, such as Redwood Materials, headed by the former Tesla co-founder J.B. Straubel, and Li-Cycle, headed by former Hatch engineers. In July Redwood announced that it would spend $3.5 billion on a battery-materials factory in northwest Nevada. Last year, Li-Cycle announced a $100 million financing by Koch Industries.

RecycLiCo Battery Materials touts its tech: minimal processing steps and up to 100% extraction of lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese using patented, closed-loop hydrometallurgical process. The company is building a pilot plant in B.C.
