Radically Modern: Backpack Toilets for Berlin (1969)

Text to Speech Demo

In order to make the sanitary modernisation of Berlin's old housing blocks more efficient and economical (thus saving them from being torn down), architect Georg Kohlmaier and artist Barna von Sartory invented the “backpack toilet”. These took the form of modules made of plastic which could be easily hung onto the windows of the old buildings, providing them with a shower and a toilet. Due to official security standards and building restrictions, the project never came to fruition - despite their innovative use of animated movies like this to attempt to convince the city's officials.
