0Prince Harry accuses British tabloids of hacking phone, stealing voicemails
Prince Harry is suing two British tabloids for allegedly hacking his phone and stealing his voicemails.
The claims against The Sun and the Daily Mirror were filed in High Court of Justice on Harryâs behalf, and involve the âillegal interception of voicemail messages,â Buckingham Palace confirmed to the Associated Press on Saturday.
The palace wouldnât provide any more details âgiven the particulars of the claims are not yet public.â
News of Harryâs claims comes just days after his wife, Meghan Markle, sued the Mail on Sunday and itâs parent company Associated Newspapers for allegedly unlawfully publishing an anguished letter she wrote to her estranged father.
In a scathing statement announcing Meghanâs lawsuit, Harry blasted the âBritish tabloid pressâ for waging a âruthless campaignâ to smear his wife that echoed the treatment of his mother, Princess Diana, who died in a 1997 car crash while trying to escape paparazzi.
News Group Newspapers, which owns The Sun, acknowledged Harryâs legal action. Reach, which owns the Daily Mirror, said it was âaware that proceedings have been issuedâ but hadnât yet received notice of them.
Former top UK newspaper The News of the World, which was also owned by News Group Newspapers, shut down in 2011 amid a hacking scandal that allegedly also involved Harry and his older brother, Prince William.
