President Biden’s Latest Executive Order May Impact Food Technology

While some people might fear the idea of genetically modified foods, currently, in the U.S., more than 90% of corn and soybeans are genetically modified, per the USDA. There are even three types of genetically modified animals raised for food in existence right now — that includes modified salmon, pork, and beef, per Food Dive.

With Biden's executive order may come further innovations for companies already experimenting with creating bioengineered meat protein, eggs, and dairy. While the technology is by no means mainstream, Forbes notes that the idea appeals to millennials who are looking for more sustainable and cruelty-free ways to produce food.

The precision fermentation process takes yeast that is then genetically modified so that it will produce something entirely new when fermented. Food Dive notes that companies are already using this process to create synthetic whey protein that is used in dairy products like milk, ice cream, cream cheese, and chocolate.
