Dutch medical technology company Philips was among the companies hacked by Chinese spies, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

The hackers, alleged to be working for China’s intelligence services, are known to have stolen intellectual property, security clearance records and other records from several companies dating back to 2014, but until now Philips has not been linked to the case.

According to the WSJ, the hackers obtained ‘sensitive medical research’ from Philips via the cloud service of Hewlett Packard Enterprises (HPE) among others.

Philips has reportedly confirmed the hack but said that no medical records were obtained.

Reuters first reported on the Cloud Hopper hackers in June, saying eight of the world’s biggest technology companies had been affected, but did not include Philips in its listing.

In 2018, the US accused two Chinese nationals of identity theft and fraud for their role in the cloud hack. The compromise was first reported on in 2016.
