Pediatricians fixing stressful patient visits with technology

How two top pediatric healthcare technology companies teamed up to help a practice make healthcare easier for families, and get paid for their efforts

WINOOSKI, Vt., May 31, 2021 — Roger Hovis’s role as office manager at El Paso Pediatrics in El Paso, Texas, means that he knows questionnaires help pediatricians get important health care data from families, but he knew that paper versions were adding time and stress for everyone involved. “We tried mailing paper copies out,” he says. “But then families forget them at home. So then it was breaking down patient workflow.” Roger knew that it was worth waiting for a better solution — a digital solution — which is why in January 2021, El Paso Pediatrics became one of the first to sign on for the integration between two health care technology companies, PCC and CHADIS, to make questionnaires simpler for patients and pediatricians.

Physician’s Computer Company (PCC), the Electronic Health Records (EHR) vendor based in Winooski, is pleased to announce their partnership with web-based screening and questionnaire solution CHADIS, or the Comprehensive Health and Decision Information System. Now the independent pediatricians PCC serves, as well as patient families, have a low-stress way to access screenings. This helps providers offer focused visits for areas of concern like asthma, ADHD, depression, and even parenting. The integration is available for all PCC users who already use CHADIS, as well as new users.

Roger continues about the convenience offered to families: “They’ve liked the idea that when they’ve got little ones, they put them down to bed, so they have time to relax and unwind and they actually get to look at the paperwork and think about it and not be rushed.” This added thoughtfulness adds to a more streamlined, efficient doctor’s visit, which doctors also love.

For pediatricians, integration to a digital questionnaire format with PCC and CHADIS means layers of convenience: no more postage fees, faxing, or waiting room stalls. Additionally, the practice can be paid more easily and consistently for their Ages & Stages Questionnaires, an important part of young kids’ well visits. Roger also looks forward to running a more efficient office: “We’ll have much better patient flow. We won’t need a waiting room with 50 chairs in it. We still want to make sure that we have that personal touch, but we want to make sure that we’re making it as easy as possible.”

This simpler, faster workflow allows pediatricians to welcome families faster, and then hone in on what a family needs to maximize their time during their visit. With PCC’s integration with CHADIS, caregivers can indicate key questions and pediatricians can note possible items of concern, making the visit hyper-focused on the clinical care that the patient needs most.

PCC’s Pediatric Solutions Director Chip Hart explains the benefits that the integration offers both pediatricians and families: “As firm believers in the important use of screening to improve child health, we’re proud to say that PCC’s integration with CHADIS is easier and more consistent for both parents and practices to manage than any other vendor on the market.”

“We are very excited to have CHADIS integrated with PCC,” says CHADIS’s co-founder and CEO, Dr. Barbara Howard, MD, FAAP. “The integration will provide easy access for patients and families via the PCC portal and will offer access to the full suite of CHADIS questionnaires. The integration design was created with the assistance of a current PCC and CHADIS user and was specially tailored for the needs of the user and patient in mind.”
