New York AG warns consumers, businesses of price gouging, cybersecurity risks in wake of Ukraine invasion
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -— New York Attorney General Letitia James warned residents and businesses Thursday of potential price gouging and cybersecurity risks in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The attorney general’s office is urging New Yorkers to report drastically high prices at the gas pump while businesses should be aware of dangerous cyberattacks.
“As the devastating conflict in Ukraine continues to escalate, New Yorkers must be prepared for potential impacts of the conflict on their wallets and their cybersecurity,” said James in a release. “Both consumers and businesses should take the necessary precautions to address the ongoing risks. I encourage anyone who has experienced issues concerning the price gouging of fuel or threats to cybersecurity to contact my office.”
Because Russia is a major gas producer, James said rising gas prices are expected. However, she said New York law prohibits fuel costs from being “unconscionably excessive” during market disruptions, including issued caused by conflicts.
Price gouging can be referred to the office of the attorney general for investigation. Sales receipts and photos of the excessive prices should be included, if possible.
While no current cybersecurity alerts have been issued, James said federal authorities are encouraging individuals to take measures to protect against online risks.
Using bot detection systems to repel against automated software and utilizing multi-factor authentication to protect accounts are steps that can be implemented to minimize risk, said James.
Additionally, filtering emails to avoid phishing attempts and training employees to avoid potential scams can protect against malicious attacks.
And for those looking to support Ukranian people during the ongoing conflict, James said people should remain wary of sham charities popping up to take advantage of the crisis.
“At a time of great chaos, confusion, and destruction, it is imperative that New Yorkers be on alert for potential risks when donating to charitable causes,” said James. “Many New Yorkers are eager to do their part to help the Ukrainian people, but scammers often take advantage of crises to exploit our generosity and compassion. We will continue to do all that we can to support Ukraine, and I encourage anyone who has experienced any issues to contact my office.”
Residents should carefully review charities before donating and be careful about sharing personal information.
