New Type of Internet Extortion: Hackers Erase Git-Repositories and Holding Code Ransom

Speech Synthesis

The practice of extortion also hit the Git repositories of programmers. Users have noticed a new type of ransomware who erases codes, replacing them with a note requesting redemption.

The main targets are GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket. So, attackers erase the entire history of commits and leave only one commit “WARNING”, which contains the file:

Fraudsters require a ransom of $0.1 BTC, which is about $570 today.

“I was working on a project, a private repo, and suddenly all the commits disappeared and were replaced with a single text file”, Stefan Gabos wrote on Stackexchange.

Experts believe that the extortionist targets poorly protected Git repositories. But for now, it remains unclear how hackers manage to access them.
