New technology provides access to critical vision screening in TLH

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - New technology at a Tallahassee health center is providing critical vision screening for people on the city’s south side.

The machine is called a Retina Vue optical machine. It helps detect diabetic retinopathy which is the leading cause of vision loss in working-age adults.

The clinic that received this machine, Care Point Health and Wellness Center, serves many patients who don’t have insurance and would not otherwise have access to this kind of critical vision screening.

Diabetic retinopathy can be a debilitating disease. It affects more than 7 million people worldwide and is one of the leading causes of blindness.

The machine helps catch early symptoms to prevent further vision loss.

Lead medical assistant at Care Point, Anndreia Hartzog, said the screening is free, easy and fast.

“So any diabetic patient can come in, and we’re in house and we can give the exam that only takes 10 minutes at the most,” Hartzog said. ”And then this will allow for us to screen for diabetic retinopathy to allow for us to be able to know if patient needs any further care.”

The machine was provided to Care Point Heath and Wellness Center through a grant from the Florida Blue Foundation.
