Nets releases eID for remote digital identification, launches EU payments alliance with partners

Nets has released the Nets Passport Reader to provide electronic ID for remote digital identification with biometric liveness detection through a smartphone app, the company announced.

The system supports passports from more than 130 countries, driver’s licenses and residence cards. As the need for digital identification is increasing due to social distancing and COVID-19 relief efforts, the reader can authenticate even people without electronic IDs, allowing banks and other institutions to enable secure access to critical information. The reader can also function as a tool for customer onboarding-related Know Your Customer (KYC) tasks.

The Nets Passport Reader app has multiple security layers, reads information on the passport chip, and uses a camera for liveness detection with facial biometrics. Future plans include adding document digital signing support, according to the announcement.

“The Nordic countries are front runners when it comes to the use of digital identification, both in the public and private sectors,” said Kai Olshausen, senior business manager, Nets. “Nets plays a key part in the Nordic digital societies, for example by hosting the national eID services both in Denmark and Norway. The Nets Passport Reader offers a new secure and frictionless method of digital identification for use in many different scenarios, ranging from the needs of public officials to private companies.”

Norwegian authorities are testing the authentication reader to identify people who do not have an electronic ID.

“The use of the Nets Passport Reader has enabled a secure way to remotely authenticate people who need access to online public services,” said Stig Slaatto-Hornnes, product manager for the Norwegian Digitalisation Agency, in a prepared statement. “Thanks to the successful collaboration between Nets and the Norwegian authorities, we have established a digital onboarding process for our MyID service in a short period of time. This is especially important at a time where physical attendance is not an option and it will also give us invaluable experience for future initiatives.”

Nets, Ingenico Group, Nexi, Worldline launch EDPIA alliance for digital payments

In May, Nets partnered with Ingenico Group, Nexi, and Worldline to launch an EU-based alliance of payment service providers to turn the region into a global leader in digital payments.

The “European Digital Payments Industry Alliance” (EDPIA) aims to contribute to the development of the Digital Single Market through EU policy discussions and frictionless payments.

“The proven reliability and flawless availability of payments infrastructure during the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis is a good reminder of the critical importance for our society of the European digital payment industry,” said Gilles Grapinet, chairman and CEO of Worldline, and the first President of the EDPIA, in a prepared statement. “By launching the EDPIA, we intend to emphasize our role through constructive dialogue with policy makers and other stakeholders that determine Europe’s payments landscape.”

EDPIA is the only trade body in the Union to represent Europe-based digital payment services. The goal is to build a payments ecosystem that supports a rules-based competitive single market. To ensure this is possible, EDPIA claims the EU should leverage the SEPA project to bring diversity through new technologies.

“Alongside our work with banking communities and other financial institutions we want to empower retailers to fully embrace secure and efficient digital payments solutions,” said Bo Nilsson, CEO of the Nets Group and Vice-President of the EPDIA, in a prepared statement. “Together, we can enable businesses to reap the benefits of digitization providing further growth across industries in Europe.”

Once the COVID-19 pandemic is over, there will be a physical event in Brussels for stakeholders.

“As we make our way out of this crisis, payments will be crucial to Europe’s recovery,” said Nicolas Huss, CEO of Ingenico Group and Vice-President of the EDPIA, in a prepared statement. “Through EDPIA, Europe’s key industry players are committing to make sure digital payments become a building block for a better, stronger European project.”
