Nearly 40% of cybersecurity execs unprepared to handle a data breach, survey finds

About two in five cybersecurity and IT executives feel their organizations are ill-equipped to handle a data breach, according to a recent survey from security consulting firm Avertium.

The 2019 Cybersecurity and Threat Preparedness Survey compiled responses from more than 200 cybersecurity and technology leaders. The majority of respondents cited complex cybersecurity tech stacks and the volume and sophistication of hacks as the two biggest pain points in cybersecurity. Phishing and malware continue to be their greatest concerns in terms of breach types.

Though most of those surveyed agreed that advanced technology is crucial to cybersecurity efforts, most have yet to implement these preventive solutions. According to the survey, while 65 percent said artificial intelligence and machine learning can solve more cybersecurity issues than humans, only 36 percent have deployed those technologies in their organizations.

Other efforts are in place to improve security efforts, however: More than half of respondents said they plan on increasing their cybersecurity teams in 2020, and 93 percent have at least one training process in place to educate employees about hacking risks.
