BENGALURU: If you thought Israel's intelligence agency Mossad was all about covert missions, high-octane chases and clinical-precision kills, you might be in for a surprise. Reason: What is shown in movies is different from what happens on the ground.
Uzi Arad, former National Security Adviser of Israel and ex-director of Israeli National Security Council (NSC), on Saturday said working with Mossad is mundane and not a risk for life at all times, as shown in films. "I watched a movie made on Mossad by Steven Spielberg [Munich]. I must say, it looks like he watches a lot of movies," Arad quipped, adding that Mossad needs to be demystified.
He was speaking at a session on 'Reimagining Intelligence' at the Synergia Conclave - 2019, organised by city-based think-tank Synergia Foundation.
Contrary to perception, Arad said more military personnel lose their lives in war than officers in the field of intelligence. However, the role of intelligence operatives cannot be undermined, he added. "Intelligence services do a lot more than just collecting and analysing information, they are also major players in world politics."
Rajiv Jain, former director of Intelligence Bureau (India), said the process of collecting intelligence has changed significantly in the new age. "Though it has become easier, there are high chances of stumbling upon fake news," he said.
Former NSA MK Narayanan, who was also Intelligence Bureau director, felt intelligence bodies need to steer clear of policy issues.
80% of J&K militants radicalised during funerals: CID study
According to a study by Jammu and Kashmir CID, 80 per cent of youth are drawn to militancy within 20 days of an encounter, mostly during funerals of militants, said former IB director Syed Asif Ibrahim. “It was realised that for militancy or radicalisation, one has to legitimise or glorify violence. Militants are glorified during funerals,” said Ibrahim, who is also a member of the National Security Advisory Board.
