Men’s Lacrosse Tripped Up at No. 17 Stevenson
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (April 15, 2022) – Graduate student Ryan Caplis matched a career high with four goals and senior Michael Burns scored twice but the Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team fell to No. 17 Stevenson University 21-11 Friday in a non-conference matchup at Mustang Stadium.
Senior Brendan Sullivan had a pair of goals and sophomore Jack Savarese had a goal and an assist for the Ducks, who dropped to 7-7 on the year. Shane Ford scored six times and Ryan Coleman and Josh Brannan each totaled six points for the Mustangs, who improved to 9-4. The contest marked the Ducks' final non-conference contest of the year and the fifth against a nationally-ranked opponent.
Senior Craig Stockfeder scored once and Burns added a pair of assists to round out the Ducks' offensive contributions.
Sophomore Jake Zeyher drew the start and made three saves. Classmate Cooper Foote came on in the second quarter and stopped five shots. Marc Poust made 10 saves in the cage to earn the victory for Stevenson. Justin Scorese relieved Poust in the final minute and did not face a shot.
Stevens won the game-opening face and turned its first possession of the game into a goal, when Burns beat Poust 90 seconds into the contest. However, the Mustangs would score the next seven goals, bridging the first and second periods to take a 7-1 lead.
The Ducks would connect for back-to-back goals to climb back into the contest. Burns began the stretch with his 27th of the year before Caplis netted the first of his four goals to bring the Ducks back with four. Caplis would add three second-half goals to match his career best, originally set Feb. 29, 2020 at Springfield. The four-goal outing was his fourth hat trick of the season and third in his last four games.
The Mustangs would use a five-goal run to take a 12-4 lead into the intermission. Stockfeder would find the back of the net coming out of halftime, but Stevenson would score the next four goals to push the Ducks' deficit to double figures.
Sullivan and Caplis would each score late in the third quarter to trim the margin to 10 and each team scored five times in the final stanza to produce the final result.
Stevenson committed 19 turnovers on the evening, with the Ducks forcing seven of them. Senior Aidan Hinphy and junior Joe Cawley each forced two, while Savarese, sophomore Mikey Whiteside and first-year Bryan Creamer each caused one. Nicholas Mulvey had two caused turnovers to lead Stevenson, who forced nine of the Ducks' 22 miscues.
The Ducks won 12 of the game's 36 faceoffs. Sophomore Conner Park had six wins in the circle, while sophomore Russell Eberding had four. First-year Andrew Muller registered two to round out the Ducks' efforts. Nolan Enneguess had 15 faceoff wins to lead both teams. Enneguess also snagged 12 ground balls to help Stevenson gain a 47-27 edge in the statistic. Eberding, Hinphy and first-year Nicolas Accardo all picked up three to pace the Ducks.
Stevens went 2 for 4 on the man-advantage with Caplis and Sullivan each converting on the powerplay. The Ducks successfully killed off both of their penalties.
Each team went 21 for 22 on clears.
Up Next: Men's Lacrosse returns to MAC Freedom play on Apr. 30 for a matchup with Wilkes at the DeBaun Athletic Complex. The Ducks topped the Colonels 21-6 on Mar. 31, 2021 in what is believed to be the only matchup between the teams.
