Kali Linux is a distro for penetration and testing vulnerabilities on a certain network the main goal of the distribution an out of the box experience for people that wan to have access to the many tools this distro has to offer.
The main desktop environment is Gnome but you can choose from other you can also build your own custom flavour of Kali as was covered on the video. Its Debian based but on my testing I wasn't able to find any Debian sources.
