The Digital Security Act 2018 and Journalism!

Channel i in conversation with Barrister Rashna Imam and Mr. Naimul Islam Khan, Editor, Daily Amader Notun Shomoy.

Points to ponder:
1. S. 32 gags investigative journalism. It renders illegal to enter offices of govt, semi govt, autonomous and statutory bodies, collect and send top secret or secret info by digital means;

2. S. 43 is highly susceptible to abuse. It confers on police powers of entry, search, seizure and arrest without warrant;

3. The controversial s. 57 of the ICT Act 2006 has been retained in principle. It's provisions have been spread over five sections. It is highly susceptible to abuse at the hands of any government;

4. Any law that imposes restrictions on the freedom of speech and freedom of the press must be consistent with The Constitution and Bangladesh's international obligations in this regard. The Digital Security Act goes too far and imposes unreasonable and draconian restrictions at a time when neighbouring democracies are doing away with these restrictions.
