IndyGo announces clean air technology for full fleet of buses

IndyGo will be the first transit agency in the nation to install technology that increases clean, breathable air in its buses.

Indiana-based Lumin-Air will equip IndyGo’s full fleet with a state-of-the art active air filtration and UV-C lighting system to help continuously clean and disinfect the air, removing pathogens, allergens and odors.

Spokeswoman Carrie Black said the technology is important, especially with the ongoing threat of COVID-19 and the flu season.

“This technology is going to cleanse the air of pathogens, of allergens, of even odors, so when people are riding our buses, when our operators are driving the buses, they are going to be breathing some of the cleanest air on buses in the country,” Black said.

Black hopes it gives riders peace of mind.

“When you are riding in an enclosed space, when we are dealing with the ongoing pandemic and dealing with colds, coughs and the flu, you are sometimes concerned about what’s in the air in those enclosed spaces,” Black said.

IndyGo will install the technology in the next few weeks.
