Hyperloop technology gets huge boost in newly passed infrastructure bill

Hyperloop transportation is one step closer to becoming a reality after the Senate passed the roughly $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure deal Tuesday.

The massive infrastructure package includes provisions that will support further development and deployment of hyperloop technology in the U.S.

Hyperloop is a new form of ground transportation currently being developed by a number of companies, including Elon Musk’s Boring Company and Richard Branson’s Virgin Hyperloop.

The transportation method would carry passengers in pods through giant low-pressure tunnels, either above or below ground, at speeds of about 700 miles per hour. The idea is to make travel between cities faster, easier and more environmentally friendly, as some hyperloop concepts would use magnetic levitation similar to bullet trains.

The landmark infrastructure bill will make companies eligible for federal funding for hyperloop projects and codifies the Non-Traditional and Emerging Transportation Technology Council at the Department of Transportation to support the safe deployment of the transportation system.

The infrastructure bill now heads to the House, where it faces an uncertain future.

Virgin Hyperloop applauded the bill’s passage in the Senate Tuesday.

“Hyperloop’s inclusion shows that we’re on the precipice of a new era that will change the way we think about mobility in this country. I hope the House of Representatives will expeditiously pass this legislation so that these additional avenues for investment in hyperloop’s successful deployment in the U.S can become law,” Virgin Hyperloop CEO and Co-Founder Josh Giegel said in a statement.

HyperloopTT, a company that's been developing hyperloop travel since 2013, says it plans to apply for federal funding for the development of “the world’s most advanced hyperloop project” in the Great Lakes if the law is passed.
