HUBBALLI: Intent on raising awareness about cybersecurity among people of all ages, and more specifically college-going students, Hubballi-Dharwad cybercrime police have launched an awareness drive, with messages being broadcast on a public addressing system.
Cybersecurity is in focus off late in the wake of a perceptible spurt in the number of cybercrimes being reported. Furthermore, many educated people, doctors among them, have been victims of phishing and other cases of fraud. A jeep fitted with an automated public broadcasting system will tour the twin cities, covering even residential localities.
The messages will intimate the public about the modus operandi of cybercriminals, besides reiterating the need to closely guard sensitive financial information. “We will inform the public about how cybercriminals speak, how they source information, at al. In the north division in Hubballi, the drive has been completed, and is expected to be launched in the city’s southern division, and subsequently in Dharwad,” a source in the cybercrime division said.
Hubballi-Dharwad police commissioner Labhu Ram said that the rise in cybercrime cases being registered in the twin cities had prompted the department to launch the drive. “In addition to making announcements to the public, we will distribute pamphlets to people. We are eager to get the message across to people across age groups. These pamphlets will contain necessary information on the procedure to be followed to lodge a complaint in the case of an individual turning a victim of cybercrime,” the commissioner said.
JM Kalimirchi, inspector of Gokul Road police station, is among those involved in the awareness drive. “This drive will help people secure themselves from cybercriminals,” he said.
