— Three weeks after a security guard was gunned down in downtown Durham, police and the man's friends appealed Friday for information that might lead to an arrest.

Jay Aaron Foust, 46, of Durham, was found shot in an alley in the 400 block of North Mangum Street on May 21. He died at a local hospital.

Foust worked for Allied Universal, which provided security at various locations in Durham, and was assigned to patrol a city parking deck near where he was shot. He had been on the job for only two months before he was killed.

A nearby resident called 911 and reported hearing five to seven gunshots.

"I'm peeking out of my window right now, and I'm seeing a security guard laying on the ground," the caller told a 911 dispatcher. "He's like dying in front of me."

Durham police released images caught on a nearby security camera days after the shooting, but they have generated few leads.

The images show an older model Ford pickup with a long bed and tinted windows that was in the area at the time of the shooting. Police said the truck makes a distinctive whining noise, and it has stickers on the back window of the cab and faded paint on top.

A passenger in the pickup can be seen in one of the images, police said.

"I have faith. I pray to God that eventually they will find the one who has done this," Dottie Windom, a friend of Foust's, said Friday. "He was a very lovable person. He would do anything for anybody. He would talk to you when you needed it. He was a loving father."

In addition to his children, Foust also is survived by his fiancee.

Police stressed that even what seems like the smallest clues could help them solve the case.
