HATE IN-SITU – Compilation of 8/15 hate/anger emotions – Audiovisual (Generative art made with code)

https://www.ispeech.org

Hate in-situ explores and investigates unique patterns and forms of hate and anger through vocal expressions and generative design. The works are audiovisuals and display various forms of hate and anger emotions that were recorded in-situ during the HATE Festival 2018, Korea. Each audiovisual is an isolated visual artifact of hate and critical to interpretation and, consequently, of the culture and the experiences of the people that formed it. Each hate experience is arranged through an audio recording into a circular shape where the beginning and end disappear, and thus the experience of hate becomes isolated into a single timeless shape - without beginning and end. The audiovisuals display hate in-situ of rage, fuck, moaned, angry, fury, growl, hate, pain, scratch, scream, yelled, you hate me, I hate you.
Hate in-situ is a collaborative work made with code (Processing), conceptualized and directed by David Mrugala, vocalized by Jung Ho Ryong, Heo Won Young and Lee Hyeong Min. The work is in progress and based on discussions regarding the definition, expressions and aesthetics of hate though audiovisuals.

Premise/Background:

The concept of this series has developed in response to the contemporary culture of media. Instead of controversial images and messages, the work rather investigates hate and anger emotions in playful and unexpected ways, to contradict the exploitation of hate and anger for attention and agenda.

Today any media needs to compete with everything else in our digital life, thousands of apps and millions of websites. Every time we open our phone, our computer or turn on the TV, our brains are walking onto a battleground. Provocative images and headlines are instrumentalized for political agendas and then being forgotten as yesterday’s news as soon as another one pops-up. Frenzy of click bait and terrifying narratives emerge as every news entity races to capitalize on a collective outrage and fear. Few events go undocumented and unnoticed and anyone can use strategies to hijack attention and promote a misleading narrative, a hyperbolic story, or an outrageous ideology. Russian hacking, North Korea, refugee crisis, MeToo, terrorism, it seems we are always in the midst of a major crisis.
It is a constant battle to capture our most scarce resource — our attention — and take it hostage for money and a political agenda. Our captive attention is worth billions to the media in advertising and subscription revenue. Thus instead of what is accurate, we are presented what is exciting. Joy and happiness however are not enough engaging. The most profitable and lasting excitement is fear. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate.
