Gunman opens fire near Russian security service HQ

Russian media say several are dead and many injured after an unknown assailant opened fire near Russia's FSB security service headquarters in Moscow on Thursday (December 19) night. The FSB said the shooter had been, quote, "neutralized" - and that it was working to establish his identity, Interfax news agency reports. But a Reuters reporter heard several gunshots in the same area after that claim, and authorities have widened a cordoned-off area. One witness said he had seen the lifeless body of a police officer lying in the street. Sirens, gunshots and screams were heard by people in the area, which is also a busy shopping district popular with tourists, and just a short walk from the Kremlin. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear.
