Google CEO Sundar Pichai visits India: meets PM Modi, talks about possibilities of AI and more

Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced that Google will soon launch a new AI-based solution in India. He also met PM Modi and expressed his support for India's G20 presidency while seeking a stronger partnership with Google in future.

By Divya Bhati: Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed the growing innovation and technological sphere in India. He also thanked PM Modi for all the rapid pace of technological change and thanked the Indian government for the continued partnership with Google and showed is support for India's G20 presidency. " Look forward to continuing our strong partnership and supporting India's G20 presidency to advance an open, connected internet that works for all," he tweeted.

Pichai, who came to India on Monday for the Google for India 2022 event, talked about how India is emerging as a big sphere for technology and will soon become a big export economy. Speaking at the Google India event, Pichai praised the government's Digital India vision and said that it has immensely helped Google bring a slew of projects which have helped the company strengthen its progress across the country.

At the eighth edition of Google for India event, Pichai also announced that soon Google is working on AI-based solutions, initiatives and new partnerships with Indian brands which will further scale-up Google's connection with India and fuel India's economy. "We are increasingly using AI to scale up the number of languages. We recently added nine new Indian languages, like Assamese, Bhojpuri, Konkani etc. We are working on one powerful AI model where we can get information through thousands of languages," he said.

Google CEO further praised the established UPI payment system in India and said, "We built Google Pay on UPI's stack and now we are bringing it to other countries around the world." Taking up the question on India's tech regulation, Pichai further said that tech needs regulation and it is important in order to safeguard the privacy of citizens. However, under the legal framework, tech companies will certainly grow and innovate. "It is important to have an innovative framework so that companies can innovate on top of certainty within the legal framework," he added.

Speaking at the Google India event, Pichai said that there's so much opportunity still ahead. "Glad to be able to see it up close, and I'm already looking forward to my next visit," the Google chief said.





Interestingly, Google hosts a Google for India event every year to announce new projects and updates to its products and services. In the eighth edition of its Google for India event which took place on December 19, Google announced slew of new features and upcoming projects including AI, new multi-search feature, Youtube courses and more. During the event, Pichai also met Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Railways, Communications and Electronics & Information Technology and thanked for all the growing opportunities. "Glad to be able to see it up close, and I'm already looking forward to my next visit," the Google chief concluded in his speech at the event.
