Field Hockey Shuts Out Marywood in Decisive Victory

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (Sept. 4, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team earned their second victory of the season over Marywood University on Sunday afternoon. They defeated the Pacers by a score of 2-0 in their final game of the Betty Richey Tournament hosted by Vassar College. It was there first shutout of the season and senior Lynda Farinella and first-year Gabi Maroney each found the back of the net for the Ducks.
 
It was a late push that gave Stevens the victory over Marywood. The two sides were knotted at 0-0 through the first three quarters but the Ducks were controlling play, outshooting their opponent 16-1 through the first 45 minutes. Farinella finally broke through with the game winner in the final quarter. She gave Stevens a 1-0 advantage on a goal assisted by first-year Emilia Lopes. Five minutes later, Maroney found the back of the net to give the Ducks some insurance with a 2-0 lead.
 
The defense played a major role in the victory. Fifth-year goalkeeper Emily Franco had to make just one save in the shutout effort. Stevens improved to 2-1 on the season with the win and Marywood fell to 0-3.

  • Stevens outshot Marywood by a total of 22 to 1, including 10 shots on goal to the Pacers' one.
  • It was the Ducks third-straight victory over Marywood, dating back to 2019.
