Elgin County OPP is warning businesses and the public following a ransonware attack on a business.

The Elgin business contacted police after it had been locked out of its computer files in what’s known as a ransonware attack. Police didn’t identify the business.

The attackers demanded a payment in crypto currency to unlock the encrypted files, police said.

The OPP’s cyber crime investigations team was notified and is investigating, police said.

The OPP advises businesses and the public to ensure their computer systems are secure by backing up data offline, using strong passwords, ensuring that ports that allow for remote connections are not left open and using antivirus software and a firewall.

Users shouldn’t click on links in unfamiliar emails because they can cause malicious software (malware) to downloaded onto computers, police said.

The OPP have outlined steps to take if you become the victim of ransomware:

  • Take a screenshot/photograph of the ransomware demand.
  • Take a screenshot/photograph of the encrypted files including full file name and extension.
  • Collect any contact email addresses provided by the attackers.
  • Keep email correspondence from the attackers.
  • Keep crypto currency wallet addresses provided by the attackers.

The OPP said it is committed to investigating online/digital crimes and preventing harm and victimization.

October marks national cyber security awareness month. For more information on current trends and how to further keep yourself secure online visit www.getcybersafe.gc.ca/index-en.aspx.
