Edward Snowden Investigation Declared Inactive by UK Police
The whistleblower is off the hook for now, according to the London Met.
The investigation into Edward Snowden has been dropped for now, pending further titbits coming to light. Bloomberg investigative reporter, Ryan Gallagher, confirmed the status following a Freedom of Information request. It's been declared "inactive pending further information being received."
The Edward Snowden palaver kicked off back in 2013 after he leaked secret documents related to the NSA and GCHQ. The UK wasn't too happy and tried to categorise the whistleblowing as an act of terrorism. Since then, the investigation status has been "ongoing" and this new update is the first of its kind, although it conveniently leaves the door open for further probes should anything new come to light.
Snowden wrote about his decision to become a whistleblower in his recent book, Permanent Record, but because he didn't get the okay from the CIA or NSA, a federal judge in Virginia has ruled that he can't keep the profits, with the government swooping in to take them instead. So he can take some solace at least into the UK backing off while he contemplates how to get his payday. [Ryan Gallagher on Twitter]
