Duluth Fire Dept’s latest technology assists in DECC’s recent ammonia leak

DULUTH, MN-- The Duluth Fire Department received funding for a hazardous materials truck, or HAZMAT, in February.

It made its first appearance in Duluth this past week when they used it for the DECC's recent ammonia leak on Tuesday.

Crew or robots enter any potentially hazardous areas with radar-like guns, called monitors, scanning chemical levels and transferring real-time data back to the truck.

HAZMAT teams can help assess and safely navigate dangerous situations in an effective and innovative way.

"It really gave all of our staff an opportunity to go through the rig, get the equipment out, employ everything that we've got and see it work," said Fire Department Technical Coordinator, Rob Morehouse.

The $65,000 HAZMAT is one of four trucks being used in Minnesota.
