NEW DELHI: East Delhi Municipal Corporation inaugurated its first technology park at New Jafrabad on Saturday for the decentralised processing solid and liquid waste through five technologies.
The focus of the project is on achieving zero garbage dumping at sanitary landfills and treating varied waste at a single place. The plant was inaugurated by MP Manoj Tiwari and EDMC mayor Shyam Sunder Agarwal.
Built at a cost of Rs 4.7 crore, the 1,000-sq-metre facility can collect floating waste from drains, use the segregated waste for generating fuel in a controlled environment, process the municipal waste collected daily from the localities and eliminate the necessity of open waste-dumping points (dhalaos).
The plant is located next to a drain from where the floating material is collected and supplied to the plant. The sewage treatment plant at the park treats water collected from the drain and recycles it for the irrigation of the green space on the complex, for flushing toilets and other water needs of the park.
“There is a plan to develop similar facilities near other bigger drains, both to keep the drains clean and touse the detritus for energygeneration,” said an EDMC official.
While the work on the project started in 2018 under the Waste to Wealth Mission, EDMC started the trial run in mid-2021, initially targeting an operation date of December-end. However, there were some delays.
Giving details of the project, the EDMC official said that the park has five units of varying capacities. “The first unit has a capacity to process 500-700kg of floating material such as plastic, wrappers, papers, etc. Then, there are the gasification and plasma pyrolysis plants, of 3 and 1 tonne capacity, respectively. These plants process the mixed and segregated waste in a controlled environment including the floating material. After processing, the waste is incinerated to produce electricity with zero emission of gases,” said the official. The ash generated is used to produce ash bricks.
“The fourth plant is of 10 tonne per day capacity and it segregates mixed waste into two fractions combustible or compostable material. The former is sent to the pyrolysis and gasifier units and the compostable material is converted to manure on the site,” said the official.
“The fifth and final plant is the wastewater treatment plant of 5,000 litres per day capacity. It treats the wastewater from the drain for various uses.
To meet the daily intake requirement of the units, there is a plan to install machines on the Gokalpur, Gandhi Nagar and SSBL drains to collect floating material.
