DC Hints Batman is Working on Lightsaber Technology

In the latest issue of Deathstroke Inc. Slade Wilson is using old Batman tech, including a weapon that very much resembles a Star Wars lightsaber.

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Deathstroke Inc. #2

Slade Wilson's Deathstroke is continuing to make use of Batman's arsenal and old technology, and it's hinted that the Dark Knight was potentially working on lightsaber technology from Star Wars. In the most recent issue of Deathstroke Inc., Slade is continuing to work for T.R.U.S.T alongside Toyman 2.0 and Black Canary. With their latest mission taking the trio to space to rescue scientists on a compromised orbital satellite, Deathstroke wields what can only be described as a double-bladed lightsaber, an indication that Batman might have been developing lightsaber tech for his arsenal (before he went broke).

The first issue of Deathstroke Inc. from writer Joshua Williamson and artist Howard Porter revealed that after Batman lost the majority of his funds and assets which were stolen by Joker during The Joker War, the organization known as T.R.U.S.T decided to invest, procuring much of the leftover tech the Dark Knight could no longer afford. They also hired Hiro Okamura's Toyman 2.0 who had been working for Batman to create new devices and gear. Now that they also have Deathstroke on their payroll, Slade has been using a variety of the Dark Knight's gear such as an old Batmobile, grapple guns, and more.

However, the new Deathstroke Inc. #2 sees Slade Wilson in space fighting with a double-bladed lightsaber. While Deathstroke did mention in the first issue that he still has some of his own weapons he still prefers, it's unclear if this lightsaber is one of his or one that Batman had Toyman 2.0 develop for his own extensive arsenal prior to Joker War. Either way, it's certainly an impressive weapon that's straight out of the galaxy far, far away which Deathstroke uses to fight back against Cyborg Superman who's trying to take over the satellite.

Deathstroke-Lightsaber

Interestingly enough, Slade Wilson claims that his new venture with T.R.U.S.T is an attempt to be more of a hero for a while to see how it feels. As a result, Deathstroke is very much operating as an anti-hero in this new series, and the opposing colors of his lightsaber blades could be interpreted as a fun nod to his current on-the-fence mentality. Beyond that, it's also just exciting to imagine the prospect of Batman looking into the capabilities of lightsaber technology while also seeing Deathstroke's practical application of the weapon (for a more civilized age).

While Slade's lightsaber isn't the only piece of tech used in this new issue of Deathstroke Inc. (Hiro dons the Dark Knight's Bat-Armor), it's definitely the most impressive and exciting. That being said, the lightsaber is most likely a one-off weapon used for this particular space mission, though it would be cool to see the iconic Star Wars weapon featured down the line to be used once more either by Deathstroke or perhaps by Batman himself in the future of the DC Universe.
