Cybersecurity resilience a top priority for Australian organisations: report

Seventy percent of Australian organisations surveyed said security incidents have affected business operations in the last two years, so it's not surprising that cybersecurity resilience is a top priority, according to the latest Cisco Security Outcomes Report.

The report identified cultural, environmental, and solution-based factors that help achieve security.

As for the types of incident experienced recently, 60.7% identified network or system outages, 52.9% network or data breaches, 52.1% accidental disclosures, and 51.4% mentioned distributed denial of service attacks.

These numbers suggest a good proportion of affected organisations experienced multiple incidents.

Given the prevalence of incidents, it should not be surprising that considerable attention is being given to coping with issues when they occur, in addition to trying to avoid them in the first place.

So 96% of executives surveyed said that security resilience is high priority for them. Common objectives included adapting to unexpected external change events or trends, preventing major security incidents and losses, and mitigating financial losses from security incidents.

“Technology is transforming businesses at a scale and speed never seen before. While this is creating new opportunities, it also brings with it challenges, especially on the security front. To be able to tackle these effectively, companies need the ability to anticipate, identify, and withstand cyber threats, and if breached be able to rapidly recover from one. That is what building resilience is all about,” said Cisco business security group CISO Helen Patton.

“Security, after all, is a risk business. As companies don’t secure everything, everywhere, security resilience allows them to focus their security resources on the pieces of the business that add the most value to an organisation, and ensure that values is protected.” 

The report identified seven success factors for security resilience, noting that organisations that had these factors present were among the top decile of resilient businesses, whereas those lacking them were in the bottom decile. They are:

1. Executive support.

2. Security culture.

3. Holding security staff and other resources in reserve.

4. Simplified hybrid cloud environments.

5. Adoption of zero trust.

6. XDR (extended detection and response) capabilities.

7. SASE (secure access service edge) capabilities.

“The Security Outcomes Reports are a study into what works and what doesn’t in cybersecurity. The ultimate goal is to cut through the noise in the market by identifying practices that lead to more secure outcomes for defenders,” said Cisco executive vice president and general manager of security and collaboration Jeetu Patel.

“This year we focus on identifying the key factors that elevate the security resilience of a business to among the very best in the industry.”

The report's findings were based on survey responses from over 4,700 participants across 26 countries.
