TUCSON (KVOA) - Cybersecurity experts are reminding people to be cautious when donating online to the crisis in Ukraine. They say scammers are taking advantage of good people.

Experts say the first step is to not trust social media. They say scammers pretend to be making donations to people in Ukraine on social media.

Cybersecurity expert Sam Curry says fake sites are often sent out over Facebook, Twitter, or email.

He says the best thing to do is pick out the most well known charities, and look at what options they are offering.

Websites like the Better Business Bureau and Give.org have lists of legitimate charities that you can look for.

"Pretend to be, for instance, the Red Cross and say 'hey we're taking donations' and send you something. If you want to give money, choose a charity, then go there. Don't respond to what shows up in your inbox," said Curry.

Look out for emails from people who you know, experts say scammers pretend to be that person, and then use a fake donation site.
