MARTINSVILLE – Students spent three weeks learning about cybersecurity at Martinsville City Public School’s CyberCamp 2016.
This summer, a state grant provided the opportunity for 32 school districts all over Virginia.
The primary purpose of the CyberCamp was to increase awareness and inform students about the vast opportunities of careers in cybersecurity.
The camp included a NASA guest speaker and field trips to the Philpott Dam and the Carowinds Amusement Park.
Roller coasters were built as part of a model amusement park and run via computers that needed protection from hacking. The park was named the Dog Park, in reference to the MHS Bulldogs athletic teams.
Campers said they protected their roller coasters from hackers by creating passwords.
Instructors said the students interest grew as they learned about opportunities available to them in the cybersecurity career field.
Students said they now feel prepared to keep themselves safe online.
The cyber camps were also offered in the city of Danville and Henry and Pittsylvania County.
