Secure Computer Disposal
Over 100,000 computers are discarded every day in the U.S., but only 13% are disposed of properly.
Cyber criminals look for improperly discarded computers and steal personal information left on them ā including social security numbers and financial data.
Ā
Hereās a few tips you can take to properly dispose of your computer:
1. Backup your data: Create a backup of any data you want to keep. You can do this with a portable backup drive or cloud storage solutions which move your data to a secure space on the Internet.
Ā
2. Wipe your hard drive: Simply deleting files doesnāt erase the information from your computerās hard drive where itās stored. Advanced, specialized software can delete your files for good.
3. Recycle: Once youāve backed up and wiped your hard drive, visit the EPA website for a list of nearby recycling locations and requirements. If your computer is in good shape, consider donating to a school or library. www.epa.gov/recycle/electronics-donation-and-recycling
