The City of Atlanta has been targeted by a massive cyberattack.
Systems handling everything from traffic tickets to water bills were affected, including Wi-Fi at the world’s busiest airport.
The source was a mysterious piece of ransomware, the first to ever cripple a major US city.
Ransomware encrypts data, then demands payment for the unlock key under threat of total data loss.
Experts suspect that a hacking group known as SamSam is responsible.
City officials have claimed that no personal data has been compromised
.
Hackers are gaining the ability to impact integral computer systems.
“We are dealing with a hostage situation... I just want to make the point that this is much bigger than a ransomware attack. This is really an attack on our government, which means it’s an attack on all of us.” Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms
The administration has stated that all options are on the table, including paying the $51,000 ransom to secure critical data.
