Bruce Schneier interview, the State of Cybersecurity

Free Text to Speech

Bruce Schneier interview on the State of Cybersecurity 2019.

We interviewed the internationally-renowned security technologist, at SecureWorld Boston, where he was a keynote speaker.

Schneier is the author of 14 books—including the best-seller "Click Here to Kill Everybody" and authors the Schneier on Security Blog, among other publications.

We asked Bruce Schneier about the following topics:
*You coined the term "Internet plus"- what is it and why is it so insecure? "The short answer is the market doesn't reward good security," says Schneier.

*Complexity is the enemy of security, according to Bruce Schneier. "Complexity is one of the difficult things but honestly if there was profit in making it secure there would be."

*Security patchy fails. Why? "You know patching is kind of reaching the end of its useful life," Schneier explains (much more in the video)

*Bruce Schneier on 5G Security & Encryption: "5G is a big deal and security is a problem. I kind of laugh at the NSA and the FBI being concerned about it because they're the ones who are pushing to make sure it's insecure."

*Schneier on backdoors for law enforcement: "as long as our phones and computers are used and carried by our legislators, our CEOs, our nuclear power plant operators, that putting backdoors in them is not just stupid. It's dangerous."

*Schneier on where cybersecurity must shift: "Really what we need is government to step in. We are now living in the world that the market gives us in terms of security. This is it. This is what the market will reward," he says.

*Is Bruce Schneier optimistic about cybersecurity? " I think we have some rocky years ahead."

*Bruce Schneier speaks at a lot of conferences where security professionals meet to discuss the challenges faced by InfoSec leaders and teams. Why is this valuable, in his opinion? "I mean, you know, we're not alligators. We don't live solitary lives. We live communal lives and we develop language to do this, So for us as a species to get anything done, we need to collaborate with each other," Schneier says.
