Two checkout-free retail outlets featuring Amazon’s ‘Just Walk Out’ technology have been installed at Boston’s TD Garden, home of the city’s National Hockey League (NHL) and National Basketball Association (NBA) franchises.

The new MRKT-branded outlets use an electronic gate, computer vision technology and a system of sensors to enable consumers to purchase items and leave the store without having to produce a physical payment device, such as a credit card.

Installation of the system was announced this week by Delaware North, the owner and operator of TD Garden, which described the move as ‘a first of its kind in the City of Boston’.

Contactless payment systems are fast becoming commonplace at major sports venues as operators seek to eliminate checkout queues, improve the spectator experience and create a safer environment for returning fans in the wake of the pandemic.

Amazon’s ‘Just Walk Out’ technology, which has been pioneered at Amazon Go retail locations in the company’s hometown of Seattle, debuted at Chicago’s United Center last year under a partnership with concessionaire Levy.

Elsewhere Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center features checkout-free shopping outlets thanks to technology provided by San Francisco-based startup Zippin.

“We are always looking to leverage technology to bring fast, easy and touch-free amenities to our guests, and we are excited to collaborate with Amazon to use their Just Walk Out technology in these MRKT stores,” said Amy Latimer, the president of TD Garden.

“These stores will deliver a fast, frictionless experience, helping to eliminate lines and get our guests back to the action on the court and the ice faster.”
