Baseball swept by Ithaca, 16-10, 12-4
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The RIT baseball team fell to Ithaca, 16-10, 12-4, in Liberty League play, Friday.
In game one, the Tigers took a 2-1 lead after the first inning, but fell behind 7-3 after two. Ithaca scored the next six runs over the next four innings before RIT got one back for a 13-4 game after six. Ithaca added a pair in the seventh. RIT scored six in the eighth and the Bombers capped the scoring with one in the ninth.
In game two's 12-4 loss, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead after one. Ithaca responded with a nine-run inning in the second. The Tigers got a pair in the fourth for a 9-4 game until Ithaca added three in the sixth.
GAME 1 – ITHACA 16, RIT 10
- RIT took a 2-1 lead after one inning. Senior first baseman Ian Libby got the Tigers on the board after graduate student right fielder Nic Stagnitta was hit by a pitch. Senior left fielder Chris Reilly crossed the plate after sophomore shortstop Randy Dodig walked with the bases loaded.
- Ithaca took a 7-3 lead after two innings after Louis Fabbo hit a grand slam and Nicholas Cutaia hit a two-run home run.
- Ithaca scored the next six runs with one in the third, three in the fourth, and two in the sixth, before sophomore second baseman John Bagley scored on a wild pitch in the sixth for a 13-4 game.
- Ithaca padded its lead to 15-4 in the seventh before a six-run inning by RIT in the eighth got the Tigers within five at 15-10. Freshman designated hitter Adam Marsh registered an RBI-single. Stagnitta walked home with bases loaded. Junior catcher Kyle Poorman had a two-run single, and then Stagnitta and Poorman scored on wild pitches.
- Fabbo capped the game's scoring with his second home run of the game.
GAME 2 – ITHACA 13, RIT 5
- Reilly's two-run home run gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead after one inning.
- Ithaca scored nine in the second, with all nine runs coming from single hits.
- The Tigers got within four runs in the fourth after Dodig's single scored Reilly and Marsh came home after a throwing error.
- Ithaca got three runs in the sixth, capped by Matt Fabian's two-run home run.
GAME NOTES
- RIT and Ithaca entered today's games with 5-3 conference records.
- In the first game, Libby had three of RIT's 13 hits, while a pair each came from Marsh, Dodig and Poorman.
- Graduate student starting pitcher Collin Reformat suffered the loss after allowing four hits, eight runs and six walks, with three strikeouts in two innings.
- Senior pitcher Matt Vitro threw four innings and allowed eight hits, and five runs with four strikeouts in relief, while senior pitcher Reagan Farley allowed five hits and three runs with one strikeout in the final three innings.
- In the second game, freshman centerfielder Sam Kulp led the Tigers in hits with two.
- Senior starting pitcher Jon Opalewski took the loss after allowing eight hits, nine runs, and two walks with one strikeout in one and one-third innings.
- Junior pitcher Peter Bossinas and sophomore pitcher Maxx Countryman allowed a collective five hits in four and on-third innings in relief.
