Text to Speech

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 22, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team earned a huge 8-7 conference win over Misericordia on Friday, April 22. The win pulled the Ducks even with the Cougars in the MAC Freedom standings.

Graduate student Hunter Silvernail and graduate student Thomas Paulich led the way for Stevens. They each went 3 for 5 with two RBI and Silvernail had a home run. Junior Michael Reyes went 3 for 4 and added an RBI as well. With the win, the Ducks improved to 25-10 overall and 11-5 in conference play.

"Important win to get. It got a little too interesting at the end" commented head coach Kristaps Aldins. "Credit to Misericordia for battling back to make it a close one. Justin Doyle was huge for us today, coming in relief putting up zero after zero. Offensively two-out hits were the story, once again. Now we need to get some rest and get ready for an even bigger day tomorrow on the road."

Misericordia was led by first-year Connor Maryniak who went 3 for 3 with an RBI and junior Derrick Vosburg who went 2 for 3 with two RBI. Junior Joe Valenti (4-2) got the start on the mound and was credited with the loss. The Cougars fell to 21-12 overall and 11-5 in conference play with the loss.

The game started with fireworks as Stevens fell behind early when first-year Jordan Fisse gave up a home run on the second at bat of the game and the Cougars led 1-0. Fisse was replaced by junior Justin Doyle after the first and then the Ducks responded quickly in the bottom of the second. Silvernail hit a bomb to center field to tie the game.

Stevens continued to extend their lead through the fifth inning. Senior Ryan Wall, Silvernail and Paulich each added an RBI in the third and the score was 4-1. The lead continued to balloon in the fifth. Paulich started off the inning with an RBI double and then senior Ryan Finegan and Reyes each added an RBI to make the score 6-1.

Misericordia attempted to make a run in the final three innings. They outscored Stevens 2-1 in the seventh to make the score 8-3 and then added two more runs in the eighth. The Cougars grounded out to score their first run of the innings and then a base loaded walk made the score 8-5.

In the ninth, Misericordia got ahold of a pitch from sophomore Jacob Buurman for a two-run home run and the score was 8-7. Buurman held stayed in to close out the game and earned his seventh save of the season. Doyle (4-1) earned the win for the Ducks.

Up Next: Stevens travels to Dallas, Pa., tomorrow, April 23, to finish the series with Misericordia on the road. The conference doubleheader is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. and the second game is set for 2:30 p.m.
