ASE Technology set to volume produce ToF LiDAR modules in 2H20

Taiwan's leading backend house ASE Technology is expected to start volume production of ToF (time of flight)-based LiDAR (light detection and ranging) sensing modules in the second half of 2020 as it has indirectly entered supply chains of first-tier automakers through its international clients, according to supply chain sources.

The volume production may be carried out at the firm's plant in Taoyuan, northern Taiwan which has been noted for processing sensors and highly customized MEMS components, and the plant's revenue contribution ratio for automotive applications is expected to rise to 20-25%, the sources said.

The sources continued ASE Technology is aggressively incorporating AI technology to support smart production of ToF LiDAR sensors later this year.

The company declined to comment on specific clients or speculations from supply chains.

According to Digitimes Research, prices and driving regulations are the two major factors that will affect volume production and market penetration of auto-use LiDAR devices.

If LiDAR devices continue to be applied to only high-end cars with unit price remaining over US$1,000, they may not be adopted in midrange and low-tier vehicles until after the price falls to around US$200. If Europe's first-tier automotive components vendors Continental and Bosch can volume produce LiDAR devices, the prices will significantly drop, Digitimes Research said.

Meanwhile, Japan has readied comprehensive regulations governing autonomous driving and may see faster penetration of LiDAR devices, with Honda and Toyota all set to roll out luxury cars equipped with LiDAR solutions in 2021-2022.
