Art meets technology at multi-media selfie museum in heart of Cambridgeside Galleria
In the midst of the pandemic, a Cambridge business opened it doors as a multi-media, selfie museum.As COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, it hopes visitors will walk in and pose for the camera.“We actually signed the lease here about a month before the pandemic, and we had 5 semi-trucks full of material that sat there,” said John Carter, CEO of Go Pixel Yourself. Go Pixel Yourself opened in November and was then forced to close one month later as part of the state’s COVID-19 business restrictions.“And then we were closed in December because we had the title museum, and then we were re-opened again in February,” Carter said.It didn't stop the sculptor, designer and inventor, who is known for his work with Dreamworks and animated holiday window displays. Carter is a former Bostonian now living in New York.He found a corner of the Cambridgeside Galleria to unfurl his latest vision --13 themed rooms including 9 million pixels where art, such as a like a quarter covered couch from Carter's close friend Johnny Swing, meets technology.It’s a selfie museum designed for the fun of its visitors.“It's really like we took Times Square and an amusement park and crammed it at the end of a mall,” Carter said.They said it’s been hard during the pandemic, and they intend to maintain safety restrictions are lifted.“So we can have lots of different groups at the same time, and you don't interact with any other group. So, if you're still feeling uncomfortable, this really was the first place a lot of people came during the pandemic because they felt safe here. So we're going to keep it that way,” Carter said.
