Apple Watch likely to get sleep tracking feature soon

Apple is hosting a special launch event at the Steve Jobs Theatre at its headquarters on September 10 where the company is expected to launch the next generation iPhones consisting of the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max. Now a new report suggests that Apple would launch the next generation Apple Watch - presumably the Apple Watch Series 5 - at the event that would come with a sleep tracking feature.

According to a report by 9To5 Mac, Apple is working on a sleep tracking feature for its Apple Watch series that won't require the company to include special hardware on the smartwatch. The feature could be announced by the company alongside the iPhone 11 series in titanium and ceramic variants, allowing the Cupertino, California based company to compete against the smart watches by Fitbit, which already offers sleep tracking feature in its smart watches and fitness trackers.

The feature internally called 'Burrito' or 'Time in Bed Tracking' would use a host of sensors and user input such as a user's heart rate, movements and noise to measure the quality of sleep in the night time. It would be available to the Apple Watch users via the Apple Health app and a new Sleep app by the company.

The report apart from giving details about the feature also detailed some of the use cases of using Apple Watch (and the sleep tracking feature) at night. In one scenario, the Apple Watch would automatically turn off the alarm if a user wakes up before the alarm goes off. In other case, the alarm set on iPhone will also play on Apple Watch as a backup option. In addition to that, users will also have the option of using a silent alarm which unlike the regular alarms would only viberate.

Battery has always been one of the key issues with Apple Watch. Apple advertises its smart watches lasting for an entire with the need of charging it each night. To work around this issue, the Apple Watch could notify users to charge their Watch before they go to sleep so that the battery lasts through the night.

The report notes that it remains unclear if the sleep tracking feature would require special hardware and so we will have to wait and see if older versions of the Apple Watches would get the sleep tracking feature.

Notably, Apple apart from launching the iPhone 11 series and the Apple Watch is also expected to launch a 16-inch MacBook Pro laptop with a new scissor keyboard. In addition to that, the company is also expected to launch a Tile-like Bluetooth tracker that would work using the tech giant's Find My app.
