Alabama school system forced to move start date again due to malware attack

Houston County Schools have again pushed back their start date due to a cyber attack.

Schools in the county were originally set to open on Thursday, Aug. 1. That date was initially moved to Monday, Aug. 5 and now, system officials said students will return to class Monday, Aug. 12, WTVY reported.

The change comes after an apparent malware attack that shutdown the system’s computer and telecommunications networks. Superintendent David Sewell confirmed the attack to the Dothan Eagle but has not commented if the intrusion was ransomware, in which hackers demand money in return for freeing the data.

Teachers and staff reported back to school on Monday as originally scheduled. Officials have not confirmed the extent of information that was exposed.

System officials are working federal agencies, including the FBI, to investigate the incident.
